RITA RAVASCO

(Portugal ◊ 1989)

Rita Ravasco (Mourão, 1989) is a visual artist whose work unfolds across illustration, painting, video, stop motion, drawing, murals, and sculpture. In 2013, she graduated with a degree in Fine Arts.

Her artistic journey began through free exploration, without a defined thematic or plastic direction. Ranging from the use of drawing tools on various surfaces to the incorporation of found objects or items acquired in flea markets, the artist creates pieces that materialize as sculpture, drawing, or painting.

Her creative process operates like a factory inhabited by multiple workers, each possessing a distinct visual signature. Her artworks are created by different “selves”as if they were operators on the same assembly line who, despite their individuality, share a camouflaged connection that reveals they belong to the same identity.

In her painting, the visual language follows an emotional exploration inspired by the scientific study of the mind. Her work traverses branches of neuroscience, psychology, psychoanalysis, and evolutionary biology, while also integrating divergent everyday noises. This search emerges as a challenge to paint in an unplanned manner, opening up space for the unconscious, error, and chaos.

At the core of her work lies a common voice: the same interventionist and activist genetic makeup, the vibrant arrogance of ironic colors, and dark visual narratives that explore the contrast between pain and pleasure, cold and warm, beginning and end. It is a symbiosis of synapses, structures, and microorganisms meticulous collections that, much like our existence feeds on experiences, build a deeply subjective world.

Throughout her career, she has accumulated numerous solo and collective exhibitions, as well as editorial illustration collaborations for publications such as Sábado magazine. She has participated in major events including Loures Arte Pública, Festival Iminente, and Boom Festival. She was also a guest artist at the ARTURb 2023 residency (LAC – Laboratório Actividades Criativas) and is represented by Because Art Matters.
