Burry Buermans, is a Belgian artist (born. 1982), based in Portugal. As a child he had a curious eye for art and the innocent dream to become an artist one day. He didn’t go to art school but always experimented with different art forms. For a long time he was looking for his own style and medium until he randomly ended up making collages. His life motto is “Chase your dreams, wherever they take you”, so he collected old Trabant cars, started a theatre company, organized and decorated his own parties, and hitchhiked around the world. His motto was not a cliché, it was a mantra.

During one of his trips in Panama, Latin America, he was shot by robbers. This shocking event strengthened his passion for life even more and instilled a commitment to facilitate others to follow in his artistic experiences. Back in Belgium he worked as a teacher and coordinated a youth service. In the summer of 2012, he moved to Portugal to focus on his work as an artist, making collages, continuing to pursue and fulfill his dreams.

FACT

  1. Many times they called me "crazy", but I prefer to see myself as a "happily wicked or pleasantly mad positivist" (I would not know what would have become of me if I wasn't like that)
  2. You can only understand what it is to be a child when you grow up to become a father.
  3. Life can be hard but a stone as well.

INSPIRATIONS My main inspiration comes from the books and stamps I work with. They dictate in a big way what I will end up doing with them.

INFLUENCES Symbolism, silhouettes, some silliness, alongside all the images that make it on to my cutting table.

VISIONS There is still a lot I want to do, but it would be nice if I get to finish the FunerARTcar project some day. The slogan is already there "We dig deeper and put the Fun in your funeral".

Number two on the list is to make a life size model of my SpaceBunny series which are prototypes of spaceships made with rabbit skulls.

It may all sounds a little morbid, but I am actually a very life loving human.

STUDIO ESSENTIALS Excell blade Nº 11 (LOTS OF IT), cutting board, paper, the old fashioned glue sticks, a pencil and a wind free space (Note to myself:  putting the AC vent on MAX = picking up and rearranging all the small cutouts I just sorted out, ... again...).

COLOR Olive green with a fluorescent orange band (the colors of my first dream car Trabant p601).

MEDIUM Old books, antique newspapers, entire postal stamp collections, slides and pictures I find in abandoned buildings.

NOISE A little bit of everything, from jazz to heavy electronics. I like the 60´s and 70´s classics - from The Beatles to Dire straits, Canned Heat, Tina Turner and Fleetwood Mac.

Jazz makes me creative and the talent of my friends from 40 Winks keeps on amazing me.

To dance I prefer full on progressive psytrance with metallic scraping sounds - if you know what I mean.
